Pregnancy and Osteopathy

Pregnancy is a time of wonder and excitement for all you expectant Mums, and it can also be one of great discomfort. Your body goes through a great physical and hormonal transformation to support your ever changing, and growing baby bump – your centre of gravity is pushed forward, and your ligaments soften. This can increase the mechanical stresses on the muscles, ligaments and joints especially around your lower back and pelvis resulting in pain or discomfort.

At Middle Park Osteopathic Clinic we love treating pregnant bellies with our pregnancy pillow. Our Osteopaths are here to help you navigate your pregnancy and birth with as little pain & discomfort as possible, to prevent and/or manage all those conditions that are common to pregnancy, birth and beyond!

When should I see an Osteopath during Pregnancy?

You can seek treatment from an Osteopath throughout your pregnancy. Treatment can help to maximise your body’s ability to adapt to the changing demands on your body, ensure good pelvic alignment and mobility, and contribute to a successful birth and healthy baby.

As the pregnancy progresses and the belly grows the extra weight puts the body under more strain as it alters the center of gravity into a forward shift, this alters the spinal curves and hormones that are released soften the surrounding and supporting muscles and ligaments this affects the whole body. These changes may cause mechanical stress or strain on the musculoskeletal system resulting in pain or discomfort.

Osteopathy and your baby

The powerful and physically demanding nature of birth, also has an enormous effect on your baby. The stresses and forces on an infant’s body in-utero and during birth can result in strains of their soft and immature musculoskeletal system. This may affect your baby’s sleeping, eating, and movement. We have Paediatric Osteopaths at Middle Park Osteopathic Clinic who have a passion and wealth of knowledge for treating babies and children. They use a range of light hands on techniques to help address any issues your baby may have.

Common issues include:

• Irritability and difficulty sleeping

• Excessive crying, restlessness, inability to settle

• Feeding difficulties in latching or suckling

• Colic, reflux or digestive problems

• Asymmetry in head shape

• Musculoskeletal and postural imbalances

• Movement difficulties transitioning to rolling, crawling, walking etc.
